  • Google Calendar ICS

In partnership with the Southeast, Florida, and Carolinas chapters, AMWA is thrilled to announce the first in-person conference since March 2020!  The AMWA 2022 Southeast Regional Conference will take place June 13 and 14 at the Luminary Hotel & Co., Autograph Collection in Fort Myers, Florida.  View the conference brochure for full details.

The conference also features the highly rated, intensive, small group, interactive workshops that are a staple of AMWA conferences. Choose from these three workshops:

• Strategies for Persuasive Writing, Susan Aiello, DVM, ELS

• Advanced Writing, Susan Aiello, DVM, ELS

• Regulations: What does a Medical Writer Need to Know?, Karen Bannick McQuoid, MA, RAC, FRAPS

Don’t miss the MedWrite Talks (reminiscent of the popular TED Talks)

• Best practices for client interaction

• Small Business Survival Skills: Your Way to Success

Enlighten Experts with Simple Language and Easy Reading

We are excited for Crystal Herron, PhD, ELS, to give this essential presentation! Crystal is an editor, educator, and coach who helps scientists and clinicians communicate with clear, concise, and compelling writing. Her distinctive style transforms conventional complex language into modern writing that engages and informs expert readers. Her guiding principle is to make the reader’s job easy. Join us on May 12th for this virtual presentation! Follow this link for tickets!

Many medical writers understand the value of using simple language to write for a general audience. But when writing for experts, they may fear that simple language will seem simplistic and offend their readers. Let’s debunk this misconception with data supporting why simplicity and readability benefit expert readers. You will also learn why writers hesitate to adopt using simple language for expert readers. Finally, you will learn data-proven tips to help you simplify your writing and make your reader’s job easy.

Crystal Herron, PhD, ELS, is a national speaker and international educator. She leads webinars, workshops, and courses to empower researchers with the principles, resources, and systems to write clearly and efficiently.

Crystal is a BELS-certified Editor in the Life Sciences and founder of Redwood Ink. She has more than a decade of experience as an editor and nearly two decades of experience as an educator. Before pursuing her passion for words, she completed her PhD in biomedical science and collaborated on diverse projects in clinical research.

First Thursday, May: Using Documentary as a Communication Method

First Thursday has a really great speaker lined up for its May evening! Will Battersby is a partner in Reno Productions, a New York film, television and theater production company and Will has been making award winning and even Oscar nominated films for over 15 years. He is the director of Salt for My Soul, a documentary based on the book by Mallory Smith and her mother Diane Shader Smith. This should be a very nice opportunity for us to expand our knowledge and maybe our interest in medical and science communication with documentary s the vehicle. "Every Man his Own Physician..." Patient Perspectives Over Time. Some things never change, until they do.

(Note: The partial quote is from an 18th century medical reference book that many Americans had in their homes).

Join AMWA Florida on Monday, November 22nd at 6:00pm for a webinar by Charles Lawrence, UCF Technical Communication master's candidate with a special interest in medical rhetoric.

The patient/physician relationship has changed since the 18th century, when medical knowledge was relatively limited. Arguably, both patients and physicians shared a common medical ignorance, and as a consequence, developed relationships that would be considered foreign to most patients these days. In our 21st century, patients often consult Dr Google before making appointments with their physicians. Now, patients often perceive themselves to be less medically ignorant than their 18th century ancestors did, changing the rhetorical interactions with their doctors, and the dynamics of their relationships with them.

A review of the academic literature suggests that while patients have historically sought medical information from outside sources, advancements in medical knowledge and medical technology impacts patient perspectives about medicine and presents significant challenges for modern physicians.
